double your fun

Sep 28 2006

So, today was the big day. If you’ve been reading the blog at all, you’d have noticed that in a few earlier posts I was forced to edit out ‘boroski.com’. There’s a reason for that, but more on that in a moment.

Boroski.com is here, it’s parked, and it’s all good. I now own the two major extensions of my name. I got it for the cool price of $45. It’s a chunk to pay for just my not-so-common last name, sure, but considering…if you remember correctly…it was going for $200 at the beginning of August when I bought the .net name, I think it’s a steal.

How it happened (a story that probably only interests me):

Well, if you remember, I’d noticed it going from a ‘live’ site to suddenly just parked at GoDaddy. Upon running a whois search I saw that it expired on August 16th. Here I was wanting and sure as hell wasn’t going to pay $200, and it looked like it just might fall into my lap. So I quickly placed a backorder on it.

Fast forward 3 weeks. The evening before I was about to claim it by default in an expired domain auction, I make the decision to put submit my site to stumbleupon.com in an attempt to drive traffic to it and see what sticks. Well in terms of site publicity, it did a lot in my opinion. Roughly 150 visitors in the first hour….I’ll wait for the applause to die down….

So I’m sitting there all nice and happy, people browsing all through the site, photos, blogs, a ton of hits to the link page (there’s good stuff in there if you don’t know already). Notice I said blog, that’s key for this next part.

Fast forward to the next morning, hits pouring in all night. I decide to peak in on the auction for boroski.com and check what time it was ending. Well this was the final day of the auction mind you, and it hadn’t had a bid in the previous 10 days it was on auction. What do I find however?

(children leave the room or cover your ears)

Some sneaky fucker had bid on it!!!! Now being the conspiracy theorist that I am, I immediately thought to myself, “dammit, somebody in all that traffic last night read my blog, and is going to try to screw me”. Right after that I did an about face and started kicking myself for even mentioning the name in the the first place…..after that 15 seconds was over, back to being pissed off at this new rival of mine. I had it all figured out. If I didn’t out bid, I was going to get an email with an offer to sell it to me from this person. Well I’ll be damned if I’m going to wait for who knows how long to get another chance at snapping it up for a ‘reasonable’ price. So I wait for the final minute of the auction…then I get busy.

My $15 bid hits….10 seconds later, outbid with 20. I go to 25 only to get out bid at 30, and then I make my $35 bid. All this is going on in an extended auction. For those that don’t know. It means that with each bid, the closing time increases 2 minutes. So god knows how long it’s going to go, and I’m not really looking to go higher than $60. Well I’m holding steady at $35 with about 30 seconds to go on the clock. 25…..20…..15….bam he hits with $40. Now I’m pissed and ready to do battle until I get it….at almost any cost. So I wait a minute, and then post my $45 bid.

From there it was time to sweat it out. Did I mention that with 4 minutes left in the auction originally, I became overwhelmed by the fact that out of nowhere all the coffee I’d drank that day decided it needed to come out. Great fucking timing!! So I’m doing the pee-dance in my seat and it gets worse because I have no clue how long this extending of 2 minutes with each bid is going to go. Unfortunately I have no catheter on hand to ease my pain.

Now the clock is ticking on my opponent, 1 minute left….45 seconds….30 seconds….15, 10, 5…..I’m a F5 addict at this point, until…….auction closed.

I WIN!!!!! boroski.com is mine. It’s now parked here for a savings (potentially) of $155 less than what it had gone for just 5 weeks prior. I’m sure the previous owner/seller, if he ever sees this and ever checks the registration info, will let out a small whimper when he realizes it was snatched up as soon as it fell to the open market.

So it’s one small step for man, one giant leap for B.
