I've been inundated with spammers via comments ever since I first brought my site online. Thankfully, I have safeguards in place to keep the comments from being posted, but now I've decided on having some fun with them.

Spammers are obviously the scourge of the internet. It’s something that everyone with an email address and/or a website has to deal with. As for me, I actually end up getting hit with the double whammy here, in that the occasional spambot is able to make it past the Captcha image on my contact form, and they’re also constantly trying to leave comments on my posts. Thankfully my comment-spam quarantine doesn’t allow for anything to automatically posted unless it meets certain prerequisites, but that doesn’t stop spambots from trying. Oddly enough, they usually provide an email address relating to the shitty scam website they’re trying to pimp out in their totally off-topic comments. That got me to thinking….maybe these spammers would like to collect each others’ email addresses.

Knowing that bots are able to detect plain text and mailto: links, I’ve decided to keep a running list of spammer emails posted in a new section of the site entitled Spambots. Here I’ll just be posting a running list of all the email addresses I receive when they come in via indisputable comment spam or site contact spam. You know… the ones that are pitching cheap Viagra or pimping their lastest “download free movies & ringtones” site. It probably will accomplish nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it’ll really only take about 10 minutes once a week to update the list. It might also fuck with the occasional person who hasn’t yet acquired the know-how to fully automate their spamming.

Ok, so I recently joined the Blackberry collective. This past week I went and splurged on the new Blackberry Tour. Hell of a phone, I must say. Now, while it’s only been 5 days, I can thoroughly understand why they refer to the devices as Crackberries. Highly fucking addicting, to say the least. Thanks to this new device, I gained a renewed love of browsing the web from a mobile phone. Something that I’d been finding myself doing less and less from my old LG Voyager. This got me to thinking that I should do a little fiddling with my site to make it mobile web friendly.

So the first thing I did was to add the appropriate plug-ins to my site, in order to make it see whether the visitor was accessing the site on a computer or a phone, in order to provide them with a more appropriate rendering of the site. For all the tech-challenged people out there, while a website might look good on your computer, you’d struggle to read that same site on a mobile device without an alternate template catering to the smaller screen. So that’s been all taken care of now. However, one thing is still bugging me.

See, mobile browsers as they currently stand, don’t have the capability to render Flash video, which is what all the videos I post are. That means that when, and if, you come to my sight on a mobile device, and hope to see the videos I post, you’re just going to see big empty spaces.

Now I did some searching, and then I did some more. I consider myself a rather adept ‘googler’, but I just couldn’t find anything to suit my needs. As it stands now, the only options, as far as I can tell, would be to say ‘screw it’ and wait for the Skyfire browser to be released to all mobile platforms (it’ll have flash capabilities). Or I could post links to the mobile versions of the videos in question. However, neither of those really satisfy me.

So to any tech savvy people out there, I pose the following question:

Is there a better way that I’m just not finding?

I’m running WordPress and couldn’t, for the life of me, find any plugins that address this issue other than actually placing a link that states “mobile users click here for video” option. Sure, that’s easy, but I’m lazy and would rather have an even more simplistic way of resolving the issue. Not to mention that I’d rather not go back and edit a shit load of posts. So if anyone happens to know of a plug-in or an easier work around, please drop me a line or leave me a comment. I’d greatly appreciate it.

First and foremost, it’s been a pretty jam-packed time with the wedding less than 3 months away. This weekend, if all goes well, I’ll be taking the car in to get the window protection put on to ward off any of those pesky flying rocks. After that it’s over to get the tuxedos lined up for the wedding. Hopefully this goes better than it did at all the previous tuxedo fittings I’ve taken part in. Sure, what seems great in front of that mirror, often appears years later to be a horrid selection in what really looks good on my Atlas-like physique. I can only keep my fingers crossed and pray.

*Shameless Plug* If you haven’t taken a peek at the business site lately, I’d urge you to do so. We just got an amazing response to an article of Katherine’s that she reposted on the designer’s blog over there leading to over 2000 visitors in just 3 days. Not bad exposure for little local design company like us. We’ve completed a few more clients whose sites you can see in in the portfolio. Business is much better than we’d expected only 6 months into it. Good things are on the horizon, too. Once we get done with the wedding and get a chance to breathe, we’ll be looking at the possibility of taking on our biggest project to date. More on that as it evolves, but it’s definitely a great prospect, and a great opportunity for some major exposure. Of course, free plugs on a site with web influence as large as boroski.com has is huge in and of itself. Almost akin to being on the top page of Digg. However, this project would definitely be a great boost and a chance at some equally great contacts. *End of Shameless Plug*

Now that we have that out of the way, I’d also like to give a very happy birthday out to my niece. She’s a happy 1 year-old today. If you remember correctly, boroski.com was one of the first official newsbreakers of her birth. When she’s famous, she’ll be able to trace her success back to the staff here (me). Building on that hugely successful appearance (and to steal a bit from Stephen Colbert), thanks to the phenomena I’d like to coin as the “Boroski Boost”, she’s currently what I consider a front runner in a cute baby contest. Feel free to check it out, and just like any election worth a damn, make sure to vote early and vote often. You don’t have to sign up, just click to vote and you’ll see an option on the right hand side to ‘vote as a guest’, or something to that effect.

At this point you’re probably saying to yourself “ok, ok, what’s with that photo of you and the other guy”. Well that other guy is the one, the only, the legend: Jim Norton. We caught his show at Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco and it was amazing as usual. Really, nothing I can say could do it justice, other than it was Jimmy at his best. So shameless plug for his site here. When you couple that with seeing Louis CK at Punchline a couple weeks back, seeing Rich Vos there the weekend after my birthday, Bill Burr at Punchline the end of this month, and Robert Kelly there next month, it’s safe to say we’ll be laughing all the way to the wedding. Which is definitely a good way to kick it all off.

Ok, enough of the palaver…this ought to keep you occupied for a bit. In case it doesn’t, here:

Great video that puts the world in prospective

***Some deals discussed here may no longer be available in stores.

This page started out as just a way to get a friend of mine fully hooked up with an Xbox 360 for as cheap as possible (barring going to any little known deal-shack on the web). Next thing I know it was given a thumbs up on Stumble. It’s intent was to include games that myself and some others in the ‘circle of friends’ have, as well as give him some good accessories to ‘complete’ the system.

That being said, do what you want with it. However, depending on where you live, read it all the way through and you’ll get everything you could possibly want AND save some cash:

Ok, here’s the deal. This is how you can get the most bang for your buck.

For accessories, you’ll need 3 things:

1) Wireless adapter to connect to the router.
2) Wireless joystick
3) Cord charger w/rechargeable battery (lasts 25-ish hours on one charge) to play and charge the wireless controller at the same time.

Here’s how you get them (there’s a trick):

Go to bestbuy.com and take advantage of their deal 10% off any game with the purchase of any accessory. Thing is you have to make 3 separate orders to take full advantage since you only get 10% off the lowest price accessory. If you schedule to pick up your order at a Best Buy store you can get all 3 orders at the same time and save about 30 bucks for all you need accessory-wise.

So basically, I’d buy:
The joystick and game Gears of War in one order
The cord charger and game Tiger Woods in another order.
Wireless adapter (for the network) & game Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter in another order.

Then get yourself:

The system, and a router. Get the $399 Premium System with wireless controller, 20 gig hard drive, and headset for Xbox Live (plus 1 month trail). Don’t be lured by the Madden deal that they offer.

Now for the router. You’re best bet is this router. It’s currently $20 off.

This brings you’re grand total of saving about $50 for about 10-15 minutes of work by placing THREE separate orders on bestbuy.com for the accessory + game deal.

Hook it all up and then set up your Xbox Live profile and you’re set. You’ll have three games that myself and the rest of the group have.

GAME ON!!!

So I’ve done some more revamping. Most notably, I’ve added a feature to let you select the color scheme you’d like to view the site in. Now how cool is that? Up in the left corner, under the eagle, you’ll see it. Just click on the color you prefer and presto…the entire site will conform to that color until some future time when you decide to change it again. I’ll be adding 2 or 3 more schemes to give a little variety to the site.

You’ve probably also noticed the ‘links of the moment’ selection over on the left side, too. Those will be updated rather regularly with older ones being dropped off and moved over to the lil’ links area of the site. They’re just some random, sometimes bizarre, things that I’ve found on my stumbles around the web. I’m currently working on adding a ‘featured video’ in the links page that will also change regularly. It’s nothing fancy, just the occasional wacky video of somebody either making a fool of themselves or some other outrageous thing that makes you say “did that just happen”. Again, all done in the spirit of making this site interesting enough for you to come back again and again.

Over the next month or so, the blog should start heating up more. Expanding past the categorization of these main page writings. I’ll update on the status of the Tanked project, as well as updates on some sites I’m working on.

Oh, and good news!! When I originally started this site, I had hoped to get the url of **censored**(edit: it was boroski.com). Well at the time it would have cost me $200 to secure the name. However, as luck would have it, the url registration expired on the 15th of August. So far, the previous owner has yet to re-up the rights to the name, so by the 15th of September, if all goes well, I should have that site in my little hands for the low, low price of $18. I’m currently ‘squatting’ it in order to ensure I snatch it up the moment it becomes available. I’ve got my fingers crossed, so wish me luck!!

Finally, I NEED PHOTOS!!!!! Damn you all, I know photos of me exist out there. I know you have them!! So take them out of the various shrines you have of me….just for a moment….and scan them in, upload them from your cameras or cards, and EMAIL them to me. Please?? Pretty please??

Ok, enough with the begging and blabbering, now on with the show…..

~Enjoy
